Year 6 make history at the cathedral

Our oldest children spent a day at Winchester Cathedral, climbing the tower and drawing the great west window.

On a bright October morning, all forty-one of our Year 6 children walked the mile into Winchester for a day at the cathedral.

Up the tower

The highlight for most was the climb up the tower — two hundred and thirteen steps, a little wind and a view all the way to the Isle of Wight on a clear day. Our guide, Mrs Pearce, told stories of the diver who saved the cathedral from sinking in 1906.

In the afternoon the children settled in the nave with sketchbooks to draw the great west window. Some of their drawings will hang in the school library this term.

Back in the classroom

The trip launches Year 6’s history topic on medieval Winchester. Next stop: the Great Hall and King Arthur’s Round Table.
